How often should I have gutters cleaned?

At least once a year - ideally late autumn after the leaves have fallen. More often if you have heavy tree cover nearby.

Can you replace cast iron with uPVC?

Yes - uPVC is lighter, cheaper and lower maintenance. If you want to keep cast iron we can do like-for-like replacement instead.

Do you fit gutter guards?

Yes - gutter guards cut down leaf build-up and reduce how often gutters need cleaning.

Can you fix a sagging gutter?

Usually yes. Most sagging is caused by failed brackets or worn fascia - both fixable in the same visit.

How long does a full gutter replacement take?

Most standard semi-detached and terraced houses are completed in one day. Larger properties one to two days.

How often should gutters be cleared round here?

Once a year for most houses, twice if you have sycamores or a mature garden behind you. Late autumn is the useful one.

Is a green stain down the wall serious?

It means water has been running down that brickwork for a long time. The stain is cosmetic; the saturation behind it is what causes internal damp and frost damage. Worth fixing before winter.

Should I replace cast iron with plastic?

Not always. On a period terrace, cast-iron-effect aluminium keeps the look, does not rust, and lasts decades. It costs more up front and is usually the better call on a house you plan to keep.

The Job Itself

WHAT THE WORK ACTUALLY INVOLVES

We watch it in the rain, or we make rain
A dry gutter tells you nothing. We flood the run with water so you can see exactly where it spills, whether it is a joint, a sag, or a downpipe backing up at the gully.

Clear and check the falls
Moss, tennis balls and half a hedge come out first. Then we string a line along the run: gutter needs a consistent fall towards the outlet, roughly 3mm per metre. Most 'leaking' gutters are just hanging level or backwards after years of bracket creep.

Repair or replace
Split joints get new seals and clips. Rusted cast iron, brittle sun-damaged PVC and sagging runs get replaced. Where the fascia behind is soft, we say so before fitting new gutter to rotten timber - which is the single most common shortcut in this trade.

Downpipes and the ground
We follow the water all the way down. Cracked shoes, disconnected downpipes discharging against the wall, and blocked gullies cause more damp than the gutter ever did.

Guttering is priced by the metre-run and material. A clean is the cheapest job, repairs sit in the middle, and a full uPVC replacement is the largest cost - but still typically a one-day job. Cast iron costs more than uPVC. Every job is a fixed written price including disposal of the old guttering.

A clear and reseal on a standard semi is typically £90 to £180. Full replacement guttering with downpipes usually runs £550 to £1,400 depending on the property and the profile.

A full replacement on a semi is typically one day; larger or three-storey properties, two.
We do not work at height in high winds. Gutter work in ordinary rain is fine - it is honestly the best time to diagnose it.
