Exactly that. Verge mortar is the most exposed cement on the roof and it eventually lets go. Dry verge replaces it with clipped units that cannot fall.

Can you match my tile colour?

Caps come in black, brown, grey and terracotta. We match to the tile rather than the fascia, which usually gives the least noticeable finish.

Do birds really get in through the verge?

Starlings and wasps both use the gap where the mortar has crumbled. A sealed verge closes it without blocking the roof's ventilation.

The verge is the edge of the roof at each gable end. Traditional mortar verges crack, fall away and let wind under the edge tiles - which then lift or fly off in storms.

A dry verge system replaces that mortar with interlocking plastic caps that clip over the edge tile and screw down into the batten. The result is a neat, weather-tight edge that holds tiles down in any wind.

The Job Itself

WHAT THE WORK ACTUALLY INVOLVES

Remove the old mortar bedding
The cement fillet along the gable is chipped away and the tile edges cleaned back. This is usually the point where the undercloak turns out to be broken or missing entirely, which is why the mortar failed.

Check the undercloak and batten ends
Batten ends at the verge get the worst of the weather. Any that are soft are cut back and the undercloak is replaced so there is a solid, level surface for the caps to sit against.

Fit and interlock the caps
Verge units clip over the edge tile and screw into the batten, each one interlocking with the one below and finished with an eaves closure at the bottom and a ridge end cap at the top.

Seal the gable line
The completed run keeps wind-driven rain out of the roof edge and blocks the gap birds and wasps use to get under the tiles - a common cause of summer callouts on coastal estates.

Dry verge is priced per gable end based on the length and number of edge tiles. A standard semi has one gable to do; detached houses have two. We always include the cost of any edge tile replacements in the written quote.

One gable is typically £250 to £450. Both gables on a standard semi or detached usually falls between £500 and £900.
